If the primary reason a highly-touted recruit wants to play college basketball is to get to the National Basketball Association, he should go to the University of Kentucky. He’s more suited to that program, better off there.

So is the University of Louisville, which was in the chase for Trey Lyles, a 6-foot-10 prospect from Indiana. The announcement was such a big deal that ESPNU carried it live Tuesday afternoon.

Granted, most high school players would go straight to the NBA for the money if they could. But the college game should be more than a launchpad for an NBA career. So much more satisfaction from the college experience for those who stick around three to five years than for players who spend most of their time in a gym for seven months.

All the recruiting analysts had concluded a long time ago that UK was his choice. Only in recent weeks was there any suggestion that UofL was anything but an outside consideration. One suspects that someone involved in the process decided that more drama was needed, giving UK more notoriety in a made-for-TV event.

A program that claims “we are college basketball” may have felt that it sorely needed any kind of victory over UofL on the heels of the Year of the Cardinal.

  1. Good luck to the young man. Not all players can handle CRP and his system. These days, are microwave days. Patience and willingness to wait are things of rarity. Plus, given the current roster who says he would be good enough to “start”. Celebrity it what a majority of recruits are looking for. You won’t get that at UL, you will at UK. No slam at either program, just the nature of the beasts.

  2. Just another me, me, me, recruit. Go hang out at uk for 8 months and see if your skills improve. At U of L your game will improve due to coach Pitino.
