The Louisville men’s soccer team waited until the last minute – literally — to punch its ticket into the Big East tournament Wednesday. With 36 seconds left in regulation, redshirt freshman Alex Obbey, making his first start, scored his first career goal off a Paolo DelPiccolo corner to give the Cards a 1-0 victory at DePaul.

With Syracuse and Cincinnati both posting losses on the day, the Cards are four points clear of the pursuit in the Red Division and thus cannot be eliminated from postseason play when the regular season concludes Saturday. Still to be determined is where Louisville finishes and whether they will host a first-round match on Nov. 2.

If the Cards win at Villanova on Saturday, they wrap up fourth place and the home game. A loss to Villanova or a tie leaves them in fifth or sixth place, depending on the outcome of the Syracuse-at-DePaul contest. That would put the Cards on the road for the first round.

Let’s hope they end the suspense quickly by scoring early and often at ‘Nova.
