The 10th-seeded Louisville mens soccer team totally dominated Winthrop in the second round of the NCAA tournament, taking a 5-0 victory that wasn’t as close as the score.

Greg Cochrane got the Cards on the board just 44 seconds into the match. A Dylan Mares goal had UofL in the lead 2-0 at the half. Mares scored again early in the second frame and the rout was on. The redshirt sophomore completed a natural hat trick before Zack Foxhoven put up the final tally in the closing minutes.

The offense was as fluid as it has been all season, and the defense was solid. Winthrop got only two shots on goal, although both required good saves from Mike Mauro.

Things broke Louisville’s way as well on the opposite side of their bracket, where unseeded Northwestern upset #7 Marquette 1-0. That means that Louisville will now host the Wildcats next Sunday instead of journeying to Milwaukee for rematch of the Big East quarterfinal they lost 2-1.

The round of 16 game kicks off at 7 pm at Cardinal Park. We’ll have a preview later in the week.
