Ever wonder what people wearing T-shirts during frigid weather are thinking?

The sun was bright but it was anything but a good day for baseball Friday at Jim Patterson Stadium. The temperatures hovering around 45 degrees in the sun, 35 degrees in the shade, with a strong wind blowing out toward right field. Conditions just right for batters, terrible for pitchers and spectators.

If the crowd of 1,197 was looking for offense, they wouldn’t be disappointed. The University of Louisville would outscore Western Michigan University by a score of 21-8, collecting 22 hits and scoring three runs in the second inning, four in the third and fifth innings, and five in the seventh.

Leading the assault was leadoff hitter Cole Sturgeon, collecting three hits, including a home run, while driving in six runs. Jeff Gardner and Danny Rosenbaum also had three hits and Zach Lucas added another homer.

The guys in the T-shirts were nowhere to be found after the three hour, 49-minute game.

Shortstop Sutton Whiting saw his first action since getting hit in the face by a West Virginia pitch a week ago. Pinch hitting in the fifth, he responded with the first of two singles, suggesting that he’s back for keeps.

The Thursday night storm apparently shut down much of the Jim Patterson Stadium scoreboard. No problem for Garrett Wall, the baseball sports info director, and his assistant Brett Eakin. Using a personal computer, they devised a way to show the score and the balls and strikes on the upper video portion.

Tom Jurich would stop by around the fifth inning, asking what was up with the scoreboard, and was assured that the entire unit would be back in working order soon.  Wall and Eakin deserve raises, Tom.
