Shoni-Schmmel-UofLCardGame

Some stretches of games find special places in the minds of basketball fans, the areas of the brain reserved for highlight reels of great players.

Sunday was one of those sequences for Shoni Schimmel, who has, in recent games, played up to the greatness expected of her when she signed to play with the University of Louisville women four years ago.

Memphis was playing with confidence, thinking maybe the Tigers could compete with this UofL team, ignite the old rivalry, maybe upset the nation’s fifth-ranked basketball team. The Tigers were matching UofL basket for basketball halfway through the first half, tied at 15-15 at that point.

Schimmel had missed her first shots, telling herself on the bench she could do better, much better than. And she would.

Shoni would go on a shooting spree, the likes of which the KFC Yum! Center hasn’t seen during its first five years.  She would hit six three-pointers over the next five minutes, propelling Louisville to a 35-19 lead.

She would wind up with a record nine three-pointers and a total of 29 points for the game in an 88-61 win, the margin only two points shy of her contributions. The 13th straight win for the Cardinals, improving the record to 20-1 for the season.

Sister Jude Schimmel was back, a welcome sight for her many fans after missing five games with an ankle injury, contributing five points, three rebounds and four assists. She was walking gingerly after a collision, having to be replaced near the end. Otherwise, great day for the Schimmel sisters.

  1. Memphis got “schimmeled”. The 10345 in attendance, plus those viewing on ESPN saw perhaps the greatest performance by an individual in UofL WBB history.

Schimmel’s post-game remarks centered around praise for her teammates creating the shooting spree.

UofL WBB. The best 20-1 team no one has ever heard of.
