J. T. Murray, former University of Louisville soccer defender, has been released by Kansas City only three weeks into training camp.

That’s a bit of a surprise considering Murray was their second round pick in the Major League Soccer Super Draft last month. Even more so, given that most teams give their draft picks a pretty decent shot at making the roster.

Kansas City has an obvious need to beef up their back line, especially with a defender capable of pushing forward and posing a threat on set pieces in the box – both qualities which Murray amply demonstrated during a standout career with the Cardinals.

Neither the club or local media offered clues as to why Murray didn’t stick. Here’s hoping he either gets a shot with another MLS team or finds a spot on an A League roster that will give him enough playing time to make an impression and get another opportunity in the majors.
