Football coaches Howard Schnellenberger and Charlie Strong were eager to pose with University of Louisville professor Elaine Wise during a recent event downtown.  Wise, chairperson of UofL’s Division of Humanities, is the Faculty Athletics Representative, serving as the University’s liaison between academics and athletics.  She is responsible for the certification of student-athlete eligibility to the Big East Conference and the NCAA.

Wise has long been a member of the Athletic Association’s Board of Directors and as chair of the Committee on Academic Performance. She has earned such awards as the University’s Distinguished Teaching Professor for Undergraduate Instruction, the Carnegie Foundation’s Kentucky Professor of the Year Award, and the Trustees Award for her service to students. Wise joined the UofL faculty during the late sixties.

As noted previously, Owsley Frazier’s demise last week marked the end of an era at UofL. Replicating the most generous donor in history will be a near impossible feat. A copy of the eulogy delivered by his close friend and fellow UofL fan Bill Stone during the farewell ceremony Wednesday is here: Owsley Frazier Eulogy

  1. Howard just indicating that he’s the best coach this program ever had in football (and always will be).

  2. I remember Elaine from my time in Freshman Symposium. She was one of the six Professors teaching our group, along with Arthur, Bill, Paul, Nina and Tom. ( I hope I got all of those first names right. The only last names I recall are Slavin, Pollard, and I believe Maloney(?))

She introduced me to the Canterbury Tales, and tried to get my first wife to understand the consequences of marriage. A dear lady, I am glad she is still going strong.
