The observer likes the sound of that, Louisville vs. Duke on the marquee at the opening game of U of L’s new 22,000-seat downtown arena.

Two of college basketball’s premier programs.

Center stage. Prime time.

Best basketball facility in the nation.

Rick Pitino let the news slip during his weekly radio show, indicating that it could be the first of a three-game series with Duke. A second game possibly at Madison Square Garden, and the third on Duke’s home court in Durham.

Think maybe Jim Host, chairman of the Louisville Arena Authority, might be playing a key role in this transaction? He’s a former University of Kentucky basketball and baseball player, former UK play-by-play announcer, and owner of a sports communications empire.

How ironic is Host’s involvement anyway? He’s involved in everything involving the arena.

  1. well said paul.like one of the previous posters said they (kitties)expect everybody to bow down to them but its not goin to happen at least not most card fans.whats your take on tomorrows game?can we do it?go cards

  2. All opinions are welcome here as long as they are respectful and not hater oriented.

Be assured, this isn’t the place to push a Big Blue agenda or bash UofL. Plenty of UK sites out there to spread that propaganda.

  3. i mean why do kittie fans come 2 louisville blogs and web sites 4 anyway and spout off their garbage.just curious.

  4. I’m sorry all you haters don’t want to admit Louisville is a premier program but being a top seven program historically pretty much makes you premier. Get over yourselves Kittie fans i mean just cause you all are relevant for the first time in years doesn’t give you the right to hate on us. Go Cards

  5. The first game at the new arena should be a big name. Duke would be great. Or UNC or UCLA or Kansas. Actually, its kind of a shame it has to be OOC, or Syracuse would be great.

It’s going to be awesome, whoever it is. I listened to Pitino’s news conference earlier and he did say they were just in talks about it, and its not a done deal.

And Charlie, delete whatever the heck you want. It’s your freakin blog.

  6. Charlie when you say no. 1 recruiting class in the works you must mean rick is putting all his marbles on the line for 2011. I hope your aware of the 2010 class haha

  7. What’s with all the UK envy? Man, it is really manifesting itself over some U of L news. Really some problems with UK fans when their team has a 17-0 record and they want to diminish what other programs are doing. They really want everybody else to bow down to them and tell them how great they are. That will never happen.

  8. What a great game to open the new arena, the program that one of our rivals salivates about in terms of respect but is unable to buy it at whatever price.

  9. It’s nice to know censorship is alive and well on this blog. If a comment doesn’t have vulgarity or profanity, why are you afraid to leave it up in it’s entirety? Any credible blog would welcome opposing views, but apparently only if it doesn’t make the author look ridiculous. Am I correct?

I’ll be shocked if this comment remains in its entirety… or even at all.

  10. This was actually featured on a dream match up on CBS’s CSI. They had Louisville winning. just a bit of trivia 🙂

  11. You know what a big stretch is: believing John Calipari follows the NCAA rules. Now that is BIG stretch.

UofL is a top 7 program, easily. I can’t help that you don’t want it to be. The fact remains that it is.

  12. “Two of college basketball’s premier programs.”

Louisville a premier basketball program? That is a stretch.

      1. Yes, actually I do follow basketball quite a bit. Please tell me, Charlie…what on earth makes you think that Louisville is a premier team?

          1. Number 1 recruiting class when? 2011? To be honest, Louisville may wind up with a Top 5 recruiting class but right now Kentucky looks like they will likely have the No. 1 class that year. Unless we (Duke) can somehow steal Quincy Miller away from them.

  13. Great scoop Charlie- Classic Game to christen the new arena- agree on the football match up too- I am really ready to see some good football again from the Cards!

  14. It is possible then that ESPN Gameday would choose to cover the opening of the new arena, since they love all things Duke in basketball.

A series with Duke? I’d like to see football included in the mix also. They bought their way out of a previous attempt. It would be better than putting an Indiana State or Central Arkansas on the schedule and the drive is only eight hours from Louisville, close enough for a road trip/tailgating venture once every two years.

  15. This would be a nice development. Thanks for the update Charlie, and I had not heard this, for I do not listen to the radio, especially any kind of AM sports talk radio.

Vanetti and I are friends, but he and I can look at same thing, and get two totally different perceptions out of it.

Just for me, it seems I do better in scouting, not being influenced by the opinionated propaganda of the media.

For example, I won a 16-team fantasy league this season, by NOT listening to ESPN’s player projections, and playing who I thought personally would do the best.

I am WAY off subject now and I need some coffee at 5 AM to stay focused, but thanks for the CRP report, and this is great news about Duke.
