Athletic directors in the Big East Conference have to be scrambling to fill open spots on next season’s football schedules.  The reason being that the Big East and West Virginia are reported to be close to an agreement on WVU’s early exit to the Big 12.

According to the Newark Star-Ledger, Rutgers and Syracuse are strongly considering a home-and-home series to make up for the loss of the Mountaineers.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh, both bound for the ACC, are unable to follow suit immediately because the ACC football schedule has been set already for next season. They would leave after this season, still a year early, if they also come to a settlement agreement with the Big East.

To make up for not playing West Virginia, Rutgers could face the Orange at home and then — as one plan proposes — at Yankee Stadium a second time (the other option for the second meeting is the Carrier Dome). For now, the plan calls for only the game at Rutgers counting in the Big East standings.

The logical choice for the University of Louisville would be a home-and-home pairing against the University of Cincinnati.  We would prefer, of course, that any game in Cincinnati be played at Paul Brown Stadium again. No way Nippert Stadium would able to accommodate all the U of L fans wanting to make the trip.

No word yet on whether U of L and UC are engaged in discussions.

  1. Big East is Fubar! Jurich had better grt this mess fixed, because he turned the Big 12 down last year and deceided to fix the Big East. And it looks fixed for good. Big East will soon be the joke of college football!

  2. Just when I thought Big East football couldn’t look any more ridiculous after inviting Memphis there is talk of home and home games. Is the Big East trying to be the ABA of college football? Forcing Pitt, Syracuse and WVU to stay is really working out well for everyone.

  3. If it has worked in basketball for so many years, maybe it will work in football. Beats playing a another cupcake.
