Asia Durr thrives with a lot of help from her teammates (Louisville Cardinal photo).

Asia Durr had a big smile on her face as she lined up for opening tip. Beaming, actually, obvious she was ready to have fun.

No jitters whatsoever.

Another big game, this one against arch rival Kentucky, and another huge performance for the University of Louisville’s women’s basketball team. The bigger the game, the more polished her effort.

Durr scoring 32 points to lead UofL in an 87-63 cakewalk over the Wildcats in Lexington on Sunday. Darn shame more of their fans weren’t in attendance, only 5,871 people showing up at Memorial Coliseum. A somber crowd for the most part, with the Cardinals never trailing after jumping out to a 7-0 start. That kind of day for the Wildcats, losing their third game in a row, their record falling to 8-4.

The UofL women were dominant in every phase of the game, breaking it open in the second quarter for 47-25 lead at halftime. The win improved the third-ranked team in the country’s record to 13-0. It was the UofL women’s second straight win over UK, including last season’s 69-67 overtime decision in Louisville.

Durr said her teammates make it easy for her. “It’s my teammates who get me going. It’s so much fun playing out there with them.”

Some of them had big games as well. including an 18-point performance from fist-pumping Myisha Hines-Allen to go with nine rebounds. Sam Fuehring with a double-double, 10 points and 10 rebounds. Arica Carter with 11 points and eight assists. Reserve Dana Evans her first double-double, 11 points and 10 assists.

“You look at our stat sheet and I tell people all of the time, we are one rebound away and one assist away from having four players with doubles-doubles,” said Walz. “I mean, it’s not just one player. Asia shoots the heck out of the ball. When she scores, her teammates do a great job of finding her in open space. We execute, I mean, I was really impressed with us.”

  1. It looked like a lot more than 5871 to most of us on press row, Charlie. Both side were pretty packed. I did notice they still aren’t putting anyone in the rafters above the East basket. Been a few years now. My guess is they know what might come flying out of there, should the UK WBB team starts trailing. Farm tools, coal lumps and over-ripe vegetables.
