Nice to have a steady flow of football news during the basketball season.

Noon football starts don’t ordinarily excite University of Louisville football fans. But one we will be looking forward to Saturday is the U.S. Army All-American Bowl at San Antonio.

A couple of four-star high school players Charlie Strong has aggressively pursued will be announcing their college football commitments sometime during the game. No guarantees but could be milestones:

  • Nick Dawson, a 6-foot-3, 228-pound linebacker from Charlotte, who has visited UofL and North Carolina State but is also considering Clemson. He’s rated as the No. 132 recruit overall in the class of 2012. Oh, and his dad lives in Louisville.
  • Keith Brown, another linebacker, is 6-foot-1, weighing 225 pounds, from South Florida. His list also includes Illinois and Miami. He had previously committed to both Illinois and Miami, but a coaching change in Champaign and the possibility of sanctions at Miami are weighing heavily on his mind.

Strong has already secured 19 freshman commitments, the latest being James Burgess, another Miami native and linebacker who chose Louisville over West Virginia, North Carolina, Cincinnati, Pitt and others. He also secured two tranfers from the University of Florida in tight end Gerald Christian and wide receiver Robert Clark, who will be eligible for the 2013 the football season.

The first day of the official signing period this year is Wednesday, Feb. 1.
